When two organizations become one, what is the border dissolving mechanism?

Do the merging partners open up for each other or is the external push so big, that the boundaries crack under the pressure?

How long can you see the scars? And how long do the rudiments of the old remain noticeable?

The actual form of the merger may vary from the design and the  intentions. Pull might be the design, while push is the reality.
